WEIGHT OBSESSION

So my friends and I are about to hit the party scene and paint the town red, its Friday night! All dolled up, pretty dresses, high heels, we’re on our way to the club. We’re in Sally’s room, secretly checking each other out to see who’s prettier than who, and then one comments…I am sooo fat. There’s an awkward silence….girlfriend what are you talking about? You look beautiful, where is that fat that you’re going on about? Deep down you know your friend is a tad bit over the normal weight.  Or is that what we’re led to believe by the media? I mean, all we see in these magazines, television, billboards, everywhere, are beautiful men and women. Beautiful of course is: Face full of makeup, small and well-trained body, fancy clothes and cars.

It’s all pressure if you ask me. I mean, there are so many beautiful young people out there who are afraid to be who they truly are, because it’s not ‘acceptable’. What happened to accepting yourself as you are and just being happy with what you have. There are so many beautiful people out there with great personalities, a good education, loving families, a lot going for them, but we just want to ‘fit-in’, be liked, be perceived as cool, its quite sad. Someone once said: If you stand for something, you won’t fall for anything. I think that is really true and if everyone believed this, we’d have a happier society. Peace..

TWO PEOPLE CAME OUT OF A BUILDING AND INTO A STORY

Hilda decides today to confront her supervisor about …well…a lot of things. Today is the day and theres no turning back now.  As she enters the office, theres a big “do not disturb” sign hanging on the handle of Lolly’s (supervisor) door. Theres a sigh of relief as she starts getting comfortable at her desk, trying to prepare for the rest of the day. First thing, checks her emails. anticipating a message that’s going to ruin her day…that message of course would be coming from Lolly, as nothing satisfies her and in her eyes, Hilda is always inefficient and just not good enough.

Hilda gives her all to her job, or so she thinks. She’s always on time, always meets deadline, hardly stays away from work, a dedicated worker, what could  be the problem? Why is her supervisor always on her case? She questions the smallest things, is never satisfied, one would think she doesn’t like Hilda.

As Hilda prints a few documents for a presentation she has later, she stumbles upon her bosses CV by the printer…guess what? Highest qualification: Grade 12. But then how did she become a superior in such an establishment with a grade 12 qualification?

This answers a lot of my questions, Hilda thought to herself. She is threatened by my Degree in Public Relations, so it seems.  This explains why my work is never good enough; does she even know what she’s doing? That remains a mystery on its own. Hilda decides not to confront her supervisor but instead, to empower herself and look for a better job where her efforts will be recognised…she’s definitely getting out of this building.

V-DAY

V-DAY

Do you think Valentines Day is overrated?

So this morning as I enter the office everything is RED. Hearts, roses, décor, the works, RED. I thought to myself, people really celebrate and honour this day, why though?

To some Valentines Day is all about celebrating the love you have for your partner, rekindling those special moments, reliving their first romantic encounters and so forth. Why only on this specific day though? Are we not supposed to celebrate love everyday? I mean, without love what have we?

Then there is the hype over buying each other gifts, putting everyone under unnecessary pressure and creating obvious awkwardness.  Many see this day as a money making scheme with retail shops going all out. The moment you step inside a shop, the first sight you see are cute Valentines Day cards, cheesy poems, love quotes, heart-shaped sweets, love songs playing in the background, the works. You can’t help but want to be a part of it hey?

What about the bachelors and bachelorettes of this world? Doesn’t this celebrated day sort of exclude them as it’s meant for the Romeo and Juliets of this world?

Well my opinion on this matter is, if two people love each other, they should show each other everyday, the 14th of February shouldn’t be a defining factor. Just my opinion…

Designer PR

Designer PR? In my opinion it sounds like a phenomenon whereby the Public Relations Specialist would be working towards a certain goal, that goal being trying to get as much publicity as possible for upcoming, new, emerging, wet-behind-the-ears designers.

Making it, let alone making it big in the design industry cannot be easy with thousands of young designers trying to make a breakthrough in this ever evolving industry. One would eventually need someone to assist with building their brand and selling their designs. That 'someone' would ofcourse come in the form of a Public Relations Publicist...

What would the Publicist need to do? One way would be to generate publicity for these designers through social media with strong emphasis on Twitter, Facebook and You.tube, to help create a blend of interactions that define the brands persona. This would undoubtedly create exposure and keep the new designers one step ahead of their competitors.

Therefore, in essence, the duties of a PR person are never ending. There is always something to do somewhere, someone who needs assistance and so forth. I, for one, wouldnt mind taking on the job of a Designer PR person as that is where my passion lies, a Fashion PR Representative. It's going to happen:)

I am...

I started studying @ CPUT in 2002...having initially applied for Information Technology (heavens know why), i ended up registering for Office Management and Technology (OMT), only because i had lost interest in I.T...ok not entirely. One of the prerequisites to study IT is Maths and i had failed it, a true blessing in disguise. I then completed my National Diploma in OMT and worked as an IT Helpdesk Operator for Lewisgroup for a good 5 years. I desperately needed something... a good job, change, just something, anything! I was just not happy with where I was in life. That is when i decided to come back and study again. Still unsure of what i wanted to study, i did some research on Public Relations and thought...not too bad! Although my true passion lies in the fashion industry, im not complaining. One of these days you will seem my name in the headlines: "Zanele Bukani: Victoria's Secret Public Relations"....I am almost certain that one day my PR Degree will land me amongst the stars..a girl can dream:)
